Scott Hutchins
I am the author of the novel A Working Theory of Love, an early look into the intersection of AI, love, family, and grief. I also…
…write short stories, personal essays, book reviews, and arts journalism…
…mentor writers and consult on manuscripts, essays, stories, and process…
…and am working on solutions to encourage reading among kids and adults (and could use your help). I found myself in books and want to help other find themselves, too.
As for my other projects, I take photos, direct a literary festival, and read voraciously. In my free time, I teach literature and creative writing at Stanford University. I spend my best days with the ever-inventive and endlessly creative visual artist and ceramicist, Shikha Hutchins.
WRITING
“Clever, funny, and very entertaining.” — The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

A Working Theory of Love — a novel
Silicon Valley: home of online start-ups, couture coffee, sexual meditation, and the future. In its midst, Neill Bassett is helping to build the world’s first artificial intelligence — a computer that talks, thinks, lies, and — if all goes to plan — feels bad about it, too. But when the experiment swerves in an unexpected direction…
My short stories, personal essays, book reviews, journalism, and interviews have been published in the New York Times, the Rumpus, Catamaran, San Francisco magazine, StoryQuarterly, and Esquire, among other venues….
MENTORING AND MANUSCRIPTS

Let’s write together. With over 20 years of college-level creative teaching under my belt, I’ve seen many projects from bare glimmer to publication. My truest goal is to help your work be its best and most genuine self. My less noble goal is to be named in the acknowledgements section of as many books as possible…
READING WITH SCOTT

This project, dear to my heart, is still in its beginnings. Essentially, I found myself through reading, and I want to make sure others have that opportunity, too. I’m focusing on young people first, because they suffer the most from the pressures and denigrations of the attention economy. But none of us are immune. We all want to be smarter, wiser, more connected, and happier, and I know a way to become all those things…
